What is Ghibli and Its History?

Studio Ghibli is a world-renowned Japanese animation studio known for its beautifully crafted films, deep storytelling, and breathtaking animation. It was founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki after the success of their earlier film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984). Since then, the studio has produced some of the most beloved animated films of all time.

History of Studio Ghibli

Founding & Early Years (1985-1990)

  • The studio was established on June 15, 1985, with Miyazaki and Takahata as lead directors and Suzuki as producer.

  • Their first official film was Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986), which set the tone for their future works—strong world-building, environmental themes, and compelling characters.

  • My Neighbor Totoro (1988) and Grave of the Fireflies (1988) were released as a double feature, cementing the studio’s reputation. Totoro, in particular, became Ghibli’s mascot.

Rise to Global Fame (1990-2001)

  • Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989) and Porco Rosso (1992) were successful both critically and commercially.

  • Princess Mononoke (1997) was Ghibli’s first major box office success in Japan, breaking records at the time.

  • Spirited Away (2001) became Ghibli’s most iconic film, winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003, making it the first (and still only) non-English hand-drawn film to win the Oscar in this category.

Continued Success & Temporary Closure (2001-2013)

  • Films like Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), Ponyo (2008), and The Secret World of Arrietty (2010) maintained Ghibli’s dominance.

  • Miyazaki announced his retirement in 2013 after The Wind Rises but later returned.

  • In 2014, the studio paused production after When Marnie Was There, causing concerns about its future.

Revival & Present (2017-Present)

  • Studio Ghibli officially resumed operations in 2017, with Miyazaki working on The Boy and the Heron (2023), his latest film.

  • The Ghibli Museum in Tokyo and the Ghibli Theme Park (opened in 2022) continue to draw fans worldwide.

  • In 2023, Studio Ghibli was acquired by Nippon TV, ensuring its legacy continues.
